YES, “Stagård” looks like – and is in fact – a Swedish name and yes, Stagård wines are not from Germany, but NO, Veritable Wines & Estates does not offer you wines from Sweden (…yet).

The estate “Lesehof Stagård” is situated in the famous Kremstal region nearby Vienna in Austria. While being a long-established, family-owned winery whose history dates back to 1786, the Swedish name was “imported” rather recently in the 1980’s. Back then, the father of current owner Urban Stagård came from Sweden and married into the Austrian vintner family. In 2008, Urban Stagård and his wife Dominique took over the estate in the 10th generation. Just in charge, the dynamic couple immediately started implementing their own philosophy: Riesling, Riesling and Riesling! Or in other words: Riesling that expresses its origin at the purest level possible. Changing the entire winemaking process to organic production was a consequent first step. Next, Urban and Dominique began vinifying each of their single vineyards separately to demonstrate the diversity of terroirs in the Kremstal. Today, Pfaffenberg, Steiner Hund and Goldberg are only some of their famous and renowned sites. Also, some other varieties, like the Austrian classic Gruener Veltliner, have been added to the portfolio. And success proves them right: Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate as well as other wine critics regularly award “Lesehof Stagård” with 90+ points.

"Nature, that packs a punch!"
