Since their wedding in 2006, Carolin and Jürgen Hofmann have united their two wineries - the Hofmann winery in Rheinhessen and the Willems-Willems winery at the (Mosel) Saar - under the motto “Slate meets limestone”.
He has made a whole series of changes since taking over the estate from his parents in 1997, including new construction, investments in cellar technology and a focus on low-intervention, environmentally friendly cultivation. The Hofmanns attach great importance to natural, environmentally friendly viticulture at both sites. Both wineries have been certified organic since the 2022 vintage.
Their wines are characterized by a clear, mineral style that reflects the different terroirs - slate on the Saar and shell limestone in Rheinhessen. The Hofmann winery cultivates around 26 hectares of vineyards in first-class locations such as the Appenheimer Hundertgulden, Eselspfad and Gau-Algesheimer Rothenberg. Perhaps that is precisely the recipe for success here: You don't overdo it, you don't take off, you stay calm, deeply relaxed, you work hand in hand and in between you enjoy watching the free-range chickens playing with the children. And here you can taste the basic qualities, which are amazingly balanced.
“Keep awareness and energy high.”
JÜRGEN HOFMANN
Gault Millau describes Jürgen Hofmann as a “true
jack-of-all-trades”. The single-vineyard wines such
as the Hundertgulden Riesling regularly receive
high ratings, including from Falstaff, Eichelmann,
Vinum and international James Suckling & Parker
